Crabwizard Forum > Touch it again and I'll feed your carcuss to the crabs!
I read on another forum that the pulling pots was a scene created by the show for drama. The implication was that since it is illegal no other boat would do that. I am curious as to the truth of this statement.
Illegal or not I believe it does happen and I don't think the show needs to "create" added drama. It was a short piece to the show that they did not try to go any further with so I think it is entirely possible that if there is a boat out there looking to get on the crab and thinks he is clear of being caught he might do this. I know on the Bay it happens to crabbers all the time. I just hope they don't steal crab in the process as with the vastness of the Bering Sea you aren't monitored all that well unless another vessel happens to spot you.

Go back and read the Edgar/Disco transcripts. He addressed this issue, and if I'm not mistaken,he said it is illegal, but that it does happen.
I know that pulling pots for the purpose of prospecting has been brought up before in different discussions, so I find it hard to believe it is rare.
I must say I'm really surprised that you would question the veracity of the scene.
Mystic
I have to agree with what Ann and Mystic are saying. Chip, perhaps we've misunderstood exactly what you are questioning...the legality or the even itself? I find it hard to believe...well, no, I find it impossible to believe that Capt.Keith would ever participate in a falsehood for the sake of television drama. Edgar does indeed allude the fact that pot prospecting does happen...and just because something is illegal doesn't mean it doesn't happen. We'd live in a far different world if that were the case. Remember to take what you read with a grain of salt...and sometimes an entire shaker full.
I can see where what I wrote has been misunderstood completely, so I am going to just drop the whole thing. I know it happens I have seen it addressed by more than one captain on more than one occasion, I find it hard to believe that Capt Keith would play that game and I don't know why the person who made the satement said it. But I will just drop the whole thing, I didn't mean to upset everyone.
No worries Chip. Misunderstandings happen and we're all big enough people here to stop the storms from brewing. Some people just desire to stir the pot...those are the people I choose to separate myself from in life.

How bad is the "pot meddling" out there? I noticed you had some pots messed with in last nights episode. Do they take your catch or just haul it to see if your on the right spot? Where I lived it wasn't uncommon a few years ago to get shot at for pulling up someone elses pots. That was the "good ole boy" days though.
Apparently unless you want to find a tanker at the other end of your pot line you better be careful what you wish for around the Hilstrand brothers, their joke on Capt'n Phil was hilarious! Just glad it didn't bust his puller bringing up that old wreck.
